Rare Disease Medical Lead

To lead and manage the Country medical organization for Rare Diseases in the Netherlands, including 3 direct reports (two Medical Advisors and one Medical Scientific Relations Manager) and a potentially growing number of direct reports.


About the role

  • To develop and execute on the Country Medical Plan that supports the strategic operating goals for the Rare Disease (RD) business.
  • Acquire and maintain in-depth scientific knowledge of Pfizer medicines within the Rare Disease area and to deliver medical and scientific activities within the medical plan.
  • Through interactions with internal and external stakeholders drive value growth of Pfizer RD in the Netherlands using a scientific approach and taking all medical as well as compliance and regulatory aspects into account to establish the role for the assigned products in the health care system.
  • This includes not only the data on the products but also the medical environment in which the products are or could be used,

Possible location for the role: The Netherlands.

Main responsibilities

  • Provides medical leadership to the Rare Disease medical team in the Netherlands
  • Builds an effective medical team on Country level.
  • Works with the Mid-Size Europe Cluster Medical lead and Country Medical Director to ensure compliance of all RD medical / business activities with local legislation, and Pfizer local / global Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Oversight of in-country RD medical responsibility of all regulatory, safety and product quality activities related to the RD portfolio of medicines.
  • Interacts with and develops enduring relationships with Regional and National opinion leaders, National and Regional advisors on clinical practice, contributors to National guidelines and National and/or Regional formularies
  • Provides medical input  into the assigned brand cross functional team(s) and where necessary into local and regional customer based marketing initiatives
  • Communicates customer feedback on product development and life-cycle strategies
  • Supports Clinical Research teams incl. protocol feasibility and nominating investigators and sites for trials for RD portfolio
  • Manages Investigator Sponsored Research or supports colleagues locally and on a regional level
  • Supports local medical team in setting up / running  local medical activities or gives support for Regional activities
  • Deals with customer enquiries on drug safety issues for RD portfolio (collaborating with Medical Information)
  • Medical support for Health Technology Assessment  work (National and Regional) related to the RD portfolio
  • Medical support for other customer facing teams, including training
  • Oversees local approval of material produced in BU in country e. g local marketing material and support of the Global team

About you

  • Preferable MD or higher level science degree or pharmacist
  • Advanced therapeutic knowledge (Rare Disease) 
  • Several years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry/ rare diseases
  • Fluent in English and Dutch
